Cookin Soul: Ten Remixes

A good remix can change the way a familiar voice lands. The words remain in place, but the rhythm around them draws your attention somewhere else: a pause, a phrase, a piece of swagger you had stopped noticing.

This selection returns to ten Cookin Soul remixes from the original We Know Good listening list. It is a small route through the archive, with space for the immediately recognisable and the tracks that invite a little more digging.

The selection

1. 50 Cent — “Stunt 101”
2. Jay-Z — “99 Problems (Cool Version)”
3. AZ — “The Come Up”
4. 50 Cent — “I Get Money”
5. Big L — “MVP”
6. Common — “The Corner”
7. Nas featuring Lake — “Revolutionary Warfare”
8. Juelz Santana — “Clockwork”
9. Inspectah Deck — “City High”
10. CL Smooth — “Cookin Soul Freestyle”

Start with a familiar voice

The artist’s NY State of Mind page includes “99 Problems (Cool Version)” and “Stunt 101,” making it a useful starting point. The wider Cookin Soul catalogue offers the context around the selection.

Pick the vocal you know best and listen for what changes around it. Familiarity is useful here. It gives you something to measure the new arrangement against, and makes the small shifts more satisfying.

There is no need to treat the order as a verdict. Follow the voice that catches your ear, then let the next record take you somewhere else.
