There is a kind of music that places you in the middle of a hazy enchanted forest and assures you with an honest intuition that everything will be all right. Although this is a very specific genre and feeling (only bands like The Flaming Lips and Luna come to mind) The Comas hazy buzzing sound undoubtedly captivates this mood. This seems odd because The Comas are New York City residents who seem to know all too well how to produce nature-infected instrumentals and melodies, Does this sound odd to anyone else? Odd or not, they make it work.

With their first single, Red Microphones leading off Spells as the first track, things don’t seem to get that much different once the song ends, and I don’t mean this in a negative way. Spells is filled with hazy psychedelic anthems that fit perfectly as the background music to any mundane afternoon. With fuzz-induced pop-psychedelic anthems that have you drifting off to far away lands, there are also slow eerie slow questionable tracks that will most likely leave the wisest confused.

With most of The Comas songwriter Andy Herod’s lyrics on the band’s previous release revolving around his ex-girlfriend Michelle Williams (yes, the Michelle Williams from Dawson’s Creek) there was a point when it became irritable hearing about Herod’s ex. With Herod switching his ex for psychedelic nature scenes, Spells is not a plea for help, but an honest album featuring sounds and lyrics that are extremely easy to embrace.
