Limitless (2011)

The most seductive promise in Limitless is the end of hesitation. Eddie Morra has a book he cannot finish and a life he cannot organise. A pill appears to remove the distance between knowing what he should do and actually doing it.

In Neil Burger’s 2011 thriller, Bradley Cooper gives that transformation a persuasive surface. Eddie’s new confidence arrives in his posture, his attention and his ability to make a room seem available to him. His intelligence becomes visible as style.

The speed of certainty

The film’s rushing perspective and restless visual flourishes suit this fantasy. Information stops looking like clutter and starts looking like opportunity. The viewer is carried along by the same momentum that carries Eddie out of his unfinished manuscript and toward much larger ambitions.

Robert De Niro’s Carl Van Loon introduces a different kind of assurance. He is already comfortable around money and power. Eddie may have acquired extraordinary mental speed, but he still has to negotiate people who know how to make another person’s talent useful to them.

That is where the premise becomes entertaining. Every apparent solution gives Eddie more to protect. Success expands the scale of the problem, and the prospect of losing access to his new abilities makes ordinary uncertainty feel unbearable.

A persuasive fantasy

The machinery of the plot is less convincing than the feeling it creates. Its escalating dangers and convenient turns ask for a generous suspension of disbelief. Yet Cooper’s performance keeps the fantasy moving: the idea of being equal to every conversation, every opportunity and every demand on your attention.

Limitless works best as a glossy thriller about that appetite. It understands how easily the wish to finish one difficult task can become the wish to master an entire life.
