Cookin Soul: A Different Groove

There is a particular pleasure in recognising a vocal before you recognise the record around it. The phrasing is familiar. You know where the next line lands. Then the drums arrive at a different angle, or a loop changes the temperature of the whole song.

That is a useful way into Cookin Soul. The remix work gives well-known rap performances another setting, making the relationship between a voice and its backing track newly audible.

The setting matters

A vocal brings its own rhythm: the words held back, the syllables pushed forward, the breath before a line. A producer can reinforce those movements or put something unexpected beneath them. Even with the performance intact, the result can feel more relaxed, more tense or more reflective.

Cookin Soul’s appeal lies in that act of reframing. Soul textures and a firm rhythmic foundation offer familiar voices a different place to sit. The listener gets the pleasure of recognition and the smaller surprise of hearing a detail that the original arrangement kept elsewhere in the mix.

A way into the archive

NY State of Mind offers an early entry point, including “99 Problems (Cool Version)” and “Stunt 101.” For a wider selection, the artist’s Remix Anthology Vol. 1 (2005–2015) gathers material from that decade of the archive.

Start with a song you already know. Listen for the point at which its familiar personality begins to shift. A change of groove can make an old favourite feel available again, without asking you to forget why you liked it the first time.
