The messages arrived as soon as I switched on my phone. I had just landed back in the United States after a holiday, and the plane had not yet emptied. Arturo Gatti was dead.
For a few moments, I stayed where I was, replaying pieces of fights in my head. The news had the strange weight that comes with losing someone you have never met but have watched with complete attention.
The work inside the excitement
Gatti made that attention feel necessary. Even when a fight was moving away from him, there was the possibility that he would find something left to give. It was easy to remember the damage and miss the skill that allowed him to keep creating chances.
His three fights with Micky Ward remain the clearest expression of that appeal. Their exchanges made the ring feel smaller and each change of momentum more consequential. Watching them, I found myself responding to the effort as much as the result.
The WBC’s account of his later title victory over Gianluca Branco places the Ward trilogy within a career that also brought world titles in two weight divisions. Gatti’s popularity can sometimes obscure that achievement. He was an accomplished boxer as well as a compelling one.
What remains
It would be too easy to reduce him to an idea of the indestructible fighter. No one is indestructible, and the punishment that makes a contest memorable is still punishment.
What I remember is the feeling of being entirely involved: the urge to stand up, the disbelief at another exchange, the relief when a difficult round finally ended. Gatti had a way of making spectators understand how much the work demanded.
The phone messages have stayed with me, but so has the gratitude that followed them. I was able to watch a fighter whose commitment mattered to me. That is enough reason to remember him well.
