Tony Sirico as Paulie Walnuts

Paulie Walnuts takes small things seriously. A slight, a habit, a question about respect: each can occupy far more space than anyone around him expects. Tony Sirico makes that disproportion a source of comedy and, just as often, a warning.

In The Sopranos, Paulie’s appearance seems to announce a settled identity. The hair, the clothes and the careful gestures suggest a man who knows exactly how he wishes to be seen. Sirico finds the uncertainty beneath that presentation.

A performance built from rules

Paulie has explanations for how the world works, including its hygiene, its obligations and its supernatural risks. He delivers them with the confidence of someone sharing useful information. The humour comes partly from how little he doubts his authority.

Sirico’s timing allows a remark to hang long enough for its absurdity to become visible. He does not need to signal that Paulie is funny. Paulie is occupied with being correct.

Outside familiar territory

The episode “Pine Barrens” exposes how fragile that certainty can be. Lost in the woods with Christopher, Paulie cannot rely on the social arrangements that usually support him. Cold, hunger and frustration reduce arguments about rank to something painfully basic.

The comedy works because the danger remains present. A man can be ridiculous without becoming harmless. Sirico keeps both qualities available, even when Paulie is at his most flustered.

The performance’s lasting interest lies in that mixture. Paulie wants recognition, reassurance and his proper place in the room. His methods of securing them can make him impossible company. Sirico gives those needs such precise expression that a pause or a turn of the hands can carry the whole character.
