Terry Silver has the resources to be doing almost anything else. That is part of what makes him such an entertaining villain. In The Karate Kid Part III, his commitment to humiliating Daniel LaRusso feels extravagant even by the standards of the people around him.
Thomas Ian Griffith plays that excess with a visible appetite for the role. Silver can present himself as attentive and helpful while giving the audience plenty of reason to distrust the performance. His politeness always seems to contain more information than Daniel has.
The helpful stranger
The trap depends on a familiar weakness: wanting a solution from someone who appears to understand the problem. As the film’s synopsis describes, Daniel turns to Silver for instruction when his relationship with Miyagi has come under strain. Silver offers a version of strength that feels immediate and forceful.
Griffith makes the attention itself persuasive. His character takes an interest, gives advice and occupies the position of a mentor. The audience can see the calculation inside the performance, which makes Daniel’s trust increasingly uncomfortable to watch.
Training as control
The training sequences sharpen the conflict between Silver and Miyagi. Discipline becomes something that can be directed toward fear and dependence. Daniel works harder while moving further from the judgement that would help him.
Silver’s eventual enjoyment of the deception is deliberately large. The laughter, the physical ease and the satisfaction of revealing his hand make revenge look like a project he has been delighted to manage.
The film’s plotting can strain belief, but Griffith gives its villain a clear internal pleasure. Silver likes arranging the situation, likes playing his part and likes watching someone discover the arrangement too late. The performance turns a bully with money into a man who has made an elaborate hobby of being cruel.
