The tyres make the first impression. They seem large enough to belong to another vehicle, with a compact cabin fitted between them almost as an afterthought. The SHERP looks strange because its priorities are unusually visible.
This is a machine whose appearance starts to make sense when the road ends. Its broad proportions put the contact with the ground ahead of almost every convention associated with an attractive car.
The wheel as an idea
SHERP’s manufacturer describes ultra-low-pressure tyres as central to its design. The large, flexible wheels help the vehicle negotiate uneven ground, while its amphibious construction allows travel on water. In the N 1200’s documented design, the tread also provides propulsion in water.
These are useful details because they explain the silhouette. The tyre is doing more than filling a wheel arch. It is one of the main reasons the rest of the vehicle has this shape.
The design also gives the cabin a particular character. Its upright surfaces and utilitarian enclosure read as a place to operate equipment, with the occupants held above the ground they are trying to cross.
A different kind of appeal
The SHERP is interesting as an object because so little of its appeal depends on elegance in the usual automotive sense. There is satisfaction in seeing a design commit to a narrow set of demands and allow its proportions to follow.
Its unusual appearance follows a clear purpose. SHERP is an example of how a difficult environment can produce an immediately recognisable form.
From a city street, those wheels look excessive. Against rough ground and water, they begin to look like the whole point.
